The World Processing Tomato Council, at the end of March, expects the global market to produce 42.758 million mT in 2023. This signifies a 4.770 million mT increase from 2022’s production of 37.988 million mT. Countries are currently in the planting stage of the season; therefore, better estimates will be available in June.

California is currently experiencing the effects of yet another atmospheric river, which has led to delays in transplanting and increased natural gas usage in the greenhouses. However, despite these challenges, we remain optimistic and have implemented plans to expedite transplanting as soon as the weather permits, which will ensure steady volumes of tomatoes well into October.

While everyone knows there has been a drought in California and that the state is expected to face another La Niña influence for 2023, two of California’s major reservoirs are in better shape now than they were at this time in 2021. Shasta reservoir in the north part of the state is at 58% of its historical average versus 42% last year, while the San Luis reservoir in the central part of the state is at 52% of its historical average versus 37% in 2021.
