Compared to 2021 production at 39.2 million mT, global production is estimated to be roughly 5% lower, finishing at 37.3 million mT. Decreases globally can be attributed to such significant factors such as water availability, land availability, and weather disturbances.

Morning Star is always looking for ways to expand upon our talented group of colleagues. Our success and sustainability as a company are a testimony to their dedication and accomplishments. Some discovered Morning Star later in their career; however, some began their time with us directly out of high school.
Through the innovative capabilities of our new enterprise affiliate, California Container Company, Morning Star now produces 100% of our fiber drums internally at our Liberty Packing facility in Santa Nella, CA. It’s one more way we’re expanding on our vertical integration, and providing additional value and cost savings to our customers.
Colleague Aaron Giampietro is back with another TOMATO BITES by Morning Star update to discuss and bring context to the recent August USDA NASS report that updated expected California paid short tons at 10.5 million tons, a 14% decrease from January’s estimates of 12.2 million tons.
On the horizon are two proposed projects that have the potential to improve California’s water supply. The first is the building of Sites Reservoir, proposed for the west side of the Sacramento Valley, spanning Glenn and Colusa Counties. Second is the Delta Conveyance Project, which proposes a fresh strategy for moving water supplies across the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

As the 2022 tomato processing season gets its start, countries around the world are experiencing difficulties resulting primarily from water and weather challenges. Farmers and processors alike are all too familiar with adapting to new adverse conditions and continue to do so. Spring crop intentions were initially 39.7 million mT but have since been reduced to 38.4 million mT, a reduction from the 2021 crop of 39.2 million mT.
Processing for the 2022 tomato crop has begun and the fourth week of harvest has been completed. The 2022 harvest is currently behind the 2021 harvest by a little over four hundred thousand tons. The last USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NAAS) intentions report showed an estimated 11.7 million tons were expected for California in 2022. As the California 2022 crop trails 2021, what conditions is the crop facing?
The standard practice to eliminate weeds in crop production around the world is the use of agriculture chemicals called herbicides. Its use has been the common alternative to prevent obnoxious weeds from affecting crop yields since the beginning of the Green Revolution, dating back to the 1960s. However, the effect of the excessive use of these chemicals is a negative impact on our environment.
The 2022 processing tomato season is underway here in California, with all three Morning Star factories now up and running. In this season’s video, our colleagues are back with an update reviewing the various improvement projects implemented around each factory. We hope you enjoy, and should you ever have any questions, please reach out to a Morning Star colleague.
Natural gas prices have been rising for some time, but the most stunning trends have occurred this past June and July. Reduced Russian gas flows set off an LNG (Supercooled Liquid Natural Gas) global export boom to fill natural gas demand gaps. It was short-lived due to the early July fire at the Texas Freeport LNG Export facility. US natural gas storage was expected to rebound; however, most of the US experienced record high temperatures soon after that, forcing Natural Gas peaker plants to meet the surge in demand.
Morning Star colleague Aaron Giampietro is back with another Tomato Bites by Morning Star update. In this release, he addresses the recent May 2022 USDA National Agriculture Statistic Services report and the current state of many California crops experiencing similar challenges as they head into 2022.
