Morning Star High School Talent Program

Morning Star is always looking for ways to expand upon our talented group of colleagues. Our success and sustainability as a company are a testimony to their dedication and accomplishments. Some discovered Morning Star later in their career; however, some began their time with us directly out of high school.

Each colleague’s journey and personal development within the company is achieved through their own will and determination; however, the role of a mentor plays an integral part in guiding that journey towards growth and success.

This mentorship philosophy became the backbone of Morning Star’s High School Talent Program, developed from a desire to offer high school graduates a unique career opportunity while at the same time considering the future of our talent base. The design of the program pairs students with an experienced Morning Star colleague who becomes their primary mentor for a year. Classroom time is replaced with hands-on, one-on-one training tailored to that student’s learning style. From the day they begin to the last day of their program, their mentor is right by their side, ensuring the development of a well-rounded foundation upon which they can build a career.

Three students participated in our program this 2022 season, and each has their own unique experience to share.

First session of Tomato School gets high marks

Earlier this summer Morning Star held our first-ever internal Tomato School. Delivering on our belief that education is a vital key to our colleagues’ development and success, Morning Star was pleased to provide this custom-designed continuing education experience.

It started with a discussion about continuous learning and technical competence building, and an idea to ask our subject matter experts what they believe colleagues working with customers should know to best represent the enterprise and provide value.

Tomato School covered a two-day curriculum that featured guest lectures from colleagues on topics from evaporation to finishing techniques, packaging, lab process, R&D, plant grafting, and much more. Day two culminated with an afternoon of hands-on lab activities – a unique opportunity to build colleague camaraderie, as well as a new level of appreciation for just how intense our lab technicians’ jobs are during this critical part of the production process. There was something for everyone, including long time colleagues who had several aha moments.

It quickly became evident that the initiative had a dual purpose of learning and improving our technical skills, and of building relationships between colleagues who don’t typically work together, providing a great opportunity to learn about who our internal resources are.

All were inspired to see how passionate our technical colleagues are about their specialty, and even though some of the material was quite advanced, their excitement and love for the science was contagious.

Colleagues are already comparing notes on how to further ripen their knowledge at next year’s Tomato School!

Why is traditional finish terminology unreliable?

Finish describes the texture of tomato paste. The texture refers to the amount of peel, seed, or core material (insoluble solids) remaining in the juice before it is concentrated. Finish is a key factor for both the yield and texture of your final product.

To ensure greater consistency of your product, Morning Star developed and has been utilizing for many years an improved means of identifying the finish for tomato paste and concentrated crushed tomatoes. These Morning Star Paste Finish Standards of Identity, as we call it, use a set of photographs to classify the texture of the tomato paste being desired vs. the use of traditional methods that rely upon the hole size of a finisher screen. This traditional method is unreliable due to variations in the production process and is especially true when ordering from multiple companies.

Factors other than hole size influence the amount of seed, peel, and other solid material passed through a screen, as described below, variation occurs for five main reasons:

The type of equipment – brand of the Finisher
Variation in screen size – screen holes are manufactured differently
Wear and tear – how new or old is the equipment?

You may be asking: “What are photo finishes?” Let us explain. Morning Star developed 8 photo-based finishes ranging in name from Very Fine Finish to Very Coarse Finish and more. Each finish has been classified by the amount of pulp, seed, and peel present or not present. Relying on a photo comparison process allows us to consistently produce a product to our customer’s exact specification vs. hoping the screen size alone will achieve the required spec.

So why now? We initiated photo finish classification within our production process many years ago and have been marketing it in ways you may not have realized. Our Paste Finish Standards brochure and product specification sheets contain these finish photos within them. However, these photos have also included a screen size range to make it easier for you, our customer, to continue ordering your products in a familiar way. The time has now come to move away from ordering by screen size and transition entirely to ordering by photo finish.
