Morning Star makes expansions to increase capacity for peeled, diced, specialty and fire-roasted products

Morning Star continuously strives to innovate and expand our operations to ensure we meet customer demand in the most efficient and cost- effective means possible.

For the 2020 season our Santa Nella facility, Liberty Packing Company, is undergoing key expansions:

The already massive tomato fire- roaster will be doubling its capacity from 25 tons/hour to 50 tons/hour.

A new dedicated processing line is being built in what was once the peach processing building.  The new dedicated line will include a steam peeler, which expands total peeling capacity from 290 tons/hour to 410 tons/hour with, consequently, additional dicing capacity. In addition, this new line will be used to expand Liberty’s specialty, organic and R&D production capabilities.

With the introduction of this new dedicated processing line, Liberty will be able to produce additional formulated industrial products, which includes fire- roasted formulated products.

New Tomato Foundation study shows market potential of tomato phenols

Tomatoes have always laid claim to health benefits such as the reduction of cholesterol levels, lowering hypertension, and providing consumers with the powerful antioxidant lycopene. In addition to those already known,

The Tomato Foundation has discovered another strength of the tomato: tomato phenols. According to their research, these phenols may have a significant impact on the world of tomato products.

Health conscious older consumers and healthy food conscious Millennials are driving the food industry to focus on natural, healthy benefits of products and ingredients, and to create new premium products that can replace medications like statins and blood thinners. This industry trend makes the tomato industry perfectly positioned to take advantage of the current market environment.

According to NIZO Food Research (commissioned by The Tomato Foundation), “Tomatoes, fresh or cooked, can improve blood circulation, boost heart and vascular health and reduce the risk of stroke or deep vein thrombosis. The summary of a recent report claims that just two medium size tomatoes or a single serving of 100ml of tomato juice, tomato soup, pasta sauce, or similar tomato product... provide a strong beneficial effect for improved blood circulation.”

Health benefits of cocoa flavanols were used to gain an official European Food Safety Authority health claim. Cocoa and chocolate manufacturer, Barry Callebaut, has experienced strong economic growth after the EFSA’s recognition of cocoa flavanols’ effect on blood flow. Danone and other companies have also experienced growth from the EFSA health claim for plant sterols in the reduction of LDL cholesterol.

Leveraging the value of the EFSA’s health claims demonstrates the food industry’s focus for science-based innovations, ones which add value for consumers in both traditional products and new, single dose product categories.

The Tomato Foundation’s Health Claim project is progressing to its second phase towards gaining a 13.5 “New Function” EFSA health claim for tomato phenols and improved blood flow. Having already been awarded a health claim for improved blood flow in 2009 (relating to an extract made from tomato paste called Fruitflow), The Tomato Foundation is ready to replicate that success.

All the bioactive compounds in the extract are present in more than just tomato paste, such as in other tomato products like crushed, diced, juice, soups and sauces.

The Tomato Foundation will reference this existing health claim trial data, which recently reached a 5-year proprietary period. This will be the core of the new application to EFSA. 90%

of the research is already done; only two additional phases of action are still required:

Phase 2: Product sample study to establish chemical uniformity in tomato paste and products and Phase 3: Two new human nutrition trials.

The Tomato Foundation aims to submit the health claim dossier to EFSA in 2019/20.

The data from the successful EFSA claim will serve as the scientific basis needed for an FDA Structure/Function health claim in the US. The ability for manufacturers and marketers in the US to use an official FDA health claim may help boost the industry.

Leading industry representatives have already described this project as a potential “global game changer” or “silver bullet” with the power to influence consumer opinion and consumption as well as add value across product categories.

In a world where labeling laws typically force producers to warn consumers against a product’s potential harms, EFSA and FDA health claims may help counteract consumer fears through positive labeling.

RWQCB rescinds $1.5 million fine

cooling pond in williamsThe Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) attempted to levy a $1.5 million fine against Morning Star in February 2016. Alleging that the processing factory in Williams, CA violated wastewater laws and completed an unauthorized expansion of wastewater ponds, the RWQCB repeatedly claimed that Morning Star’s actions were “egregious” in nature.

Morning Star immediately contested the fine, as well as the allegations that it had failed to inform the RWQCB about expanding its facility in Williams. Morning Star’s councel submitted a Public Records Act request in order to obtain all pertinent RWQCB files.

During the course of discovery, Morning Star’s councel found a report written by a staff member of the RWQCB which described a meeting where Morning Star laid out its plans for a plant expansion as well as increasing the size of the cooling pond.

In direct conflict with this written document was an affidavit signed by the same RWQCB staff member, stating that the Board had no knowledge of any expansion plans. The original report, critical to Morning Star’s defense, was inexplicably not included in the report conclusions presented by the compliance officer and Prosecution Team during the 2016 hearing.

On February 23, 2017 the RWQCB held a hearing and officially rescinded the $1.5 million penalty.

Organic products have become increasingly popular in the retail marketplace.  In response to our customers’ demand for these products, Morning Star has begun construction on a dedicated organic processing line within our Liberty Packing facility in Santa Nella, CA.

The organic line will begin production in 2015 with a total processing capacity of 150 tons per hour. This system will have a virtually unlimited paste production capacity and an organic bulk diced capacity of over 100 million pounds.

This new line will be capable of producing organic paste, diced, concentrates, formulated products, and our unique fire-roasted tomatoes in a variety of packaging that includes bulk bins, drums, cans (all sizes), and pouches.

By creating a dedicated specialty products line, we will have the ability to process organic tomatoes all season long, rather than only at the start of the season. This will result in higher quality and more reliable organic tomato products at competitive prices. With tomatoes in the south having higher levels of color and sugars, we will produce more colorful, flavorful organic tomato products.

While our San Joaquin Valley facility will be undergoing changes, our Northern Sacramento Valley processing plant in Colusa County will be expanding as well, as it is an ideal location for processing tomatoes given the water issues brought on by this season’s drought. Groundwater availability is higher in the Sacramento Valley. With greater access to water, our Williams plant will increase its processing throughput by 65% and add an additional capacity of 300 million pounds of paste per year.
